CCTV Storage: How to Choose Hard Drives and MicroSD Cards

Surveillance writes 24/7 — ordinary PC drives and phone-grade SD cards are the two most common silent failures in CCTV. Here is how to buy storage that survives.

Why Surveillance Storage Is Its Own Category

A CCTV disk never rests: multiple camera streams write continuously, around the clock, for years. Hardware built for office duty cycles fails early and silently under that load.

Surveillance-class hard drives are firmware-tuned for continuous multi-stream video writes and rated for 24/7 operation — that is what belongs in an NVR's bays. The same logic applies at the edge: high-endurance TF cards are rated in P/E (program/erase) cycles, and the difference is dramatic — our MT Red series is rated at 3000 P/E cycles with a -25°C to 85°C operating range, versus roughly 500 cycles for a consumer card. In a camera overwriting itself weekly, that is the difference between years and months.

Edge cards matter more than most buyers think: on solar 4G cameras the TF card is the primary recorder, and on PoE cameras with ANR it bridges network outages, backfilling the NVR when the link returns. A failed card means those safety nets silently stop existing.

Sizing in Four Steps

Storage sizing is arithmetic, not guesswork. Four numbers give the answer.

  1. List cameras and their main-stream bitrates (H.265 typically 2–4Mbps for 4MP, more for 4K).
  2. Fix the retention requirement in days — ask the insurer or the client's compliance officer, not the installer's habit.
  3. Compute: TB ≈ cameras × Mbps × days × 0.0108. Sixteen 4Mbps cameras for 30 days ≈ 21TB → three 8TB drives.
  4. Add margin: 20% capacity headroom, RAID 1/5 where footage has legal weight, and match card capacity to the camera's stated maximum (commonly 256GB or 512GB).

Two habits stretch any budget further: enable motion/event recording where continuous footage is not legally required, and let H.265 do its job end to end — together they can multiply retention days without buying a single extra terabyte.

Matching the Card to the Camera

Not every TF card fits every duty. Our range splits by workload, and the split matters.

For cameras that loop-record around the clock — solar 4G units, ANR backup, standalone recording — specify the high-endurance tier: MT Red at 3000 P/E cycles, wide temperature, with health monitoring on compatible recorders. Dashcams and devices with heavy vibration and heat cycles also belong in the endurance tier, not on consumer cards.

Lighter tiers exist for lighter duties — event-only snapshots, temporary deployments, general file duty — at friendlier prices per gigabyte. The honest advice: never put the lightest tier in a camera that loop-records continuously; the warranty maths does not work out.

How many days will one 8TB surveillance drive hold?

At H.265 and 4Mbps per camera: roughly 23 days of 8 cameras, or 11–12 days of 16. Halve the bitrate and days double. Send your camera list and we return the exact table for your site.

What does 3000 P/E cycles actually mean for lifespan?

A P/E cycle is one full write-and-erase of the card. A camera that overwrites its card weekly consumes ~52 cycles a year — at 3000 rated cycles the flash outlives the camera. A ~500-cycle consumer card on the same duty is into wear-out territory within a couple of years.

Do I need both an NVR disk and TF cards in the cameras?

For professional sites, yes — they answer different failures. The NVR disk is the archive; the edge card covers network outages (ANR backfills the gap automatically on supported models) and keeps solar 4G cameras recording with no network at all.

Can you preinstall and format the disks before shipping?

Why not just buy cards and drives locally?
