How to Choose an LED Display: Pitch, Brightness and Location

Three numbers decide 90% of an LED project: viewing distance, ambient light and total screen size. Get those first — the model follows.

Pixel Pitch: The Only Rule You Need

Minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres roughly equals the pixel pitch in millimetres. A P2.5 screen looks seamless from 2.5m; a P10 needs 10m.

Paying for finer pitch than your audience can perceive is the most common way LED budgets get wasted. A lobby screen viewed from 4m does not need P1.8; a roadside board read from 30m is perfectly served by coarse pitch — and the savings per square metre are large. Work out where the nearest realistic viewer stands, apply the rule, and resist the temptation to spec finer "to be safe".

For premium close-range walls — control rooms, TV studios, retail flagships — COB (chip-on-board) packaging is worth knowing: the LEDs are sealed under a resin layer, so the surface resists knocks, dust and cleaning far better than conventional SMD, and fine pitches stay uniform. Five Steps From Site to Spec

Answer these in order and send us the results — that is a complete enquiry.

  1. Measure the nearest viewer distance → that sets maximum pixel pitch (metres ≈ millimetres).
  2. Judge ambient light: indoor walls need hundreds of nits; shop windows and anything in direct sun need thousands. Outdoor screens must also carry an outdoor IP rating.
  3. Fix total width × height in metres, then check the resulting resolution at your chosen pitch actually fits your content (a 4m P2.5 wall is 1600px wide — fine for full-HD content).
  4. Decide the mounting: wall-mount, floor-standing, hanging or embedded — it changes cabinet choice, service access (front vs rear maintenance) and structural load.
  5. Plan the feed: what plays on the screen, from what source, and does the site need a video wall processor to split, scale or switch inputs?

Power and heat deserve one honest sentence: LED walls draw real current (figures are listed per model page), so budget the electrical circuit and ventilation with the screen, not after it.

Indoor, Outdoor, or Behind Glass?

The three environments have different physics — and shop windows are the one everyone gets wrong.

Indoor walls live in controlled light and prioritise pitch and colour; outdoor boards fight the sun with multi-thousand-nit brightness, sealed cabinets and weatherproofing. Behind glass is the trap: sunlight through a window can wash out an indoor screen, so window displays need outdoor-class brightness even though they hang indoors. Transparent LED designs exist exactly for this — bright toward the street, see-through from inside the shop.

Meeting rooms are their own case: an all-in-one conference LED or a 4K interactive touch panel replaces projector-plus-whiteboard in one device, with video-conferencing cameras and wireless casting built into the higher models. If the room seats under 20 people, start there rather than with a modular wall.

Four Expensive LED Mistakes

Every one of these has stranded a screen in a warehouse or on a wall.

Indoor brightness in a shop window

MISTAKEThe screen looks great at night and vanishes into a grey rectangle every sunny afternoon.

DO THISWindow-facing screens need outdoor-class nits or purpose-built transparent LED — specify against the sunniest hour, not the demo at dusk.

Fine pitch nobody can see

MISTAKEP1.8 specified for a hall where the nearest viewer stands 6m away — the budget doubled for zero visible difference.

DO THISApply metres≈millimetres, then spend the savings on brightness, redundant power or spare modules instead.

Forgetting front-versus-rear maintenance

MISTAKEThe wall is flush-mounted against concrete; the first dead module requires dismounting half the screen to reach from behind.

DO THISFlush installs need front-service cabinets. Decide the service direction at drawing stage — it is a cabinet choice, not a site improvisation.

No processor in a multi-source room

MISTAKEThe control room wall arrives, then someone asks to show four sources at once — and the screen can only mirror one input.

DO THISAny wall showing more than one source needs a video wall processor specified with the screen: inputs, layouts and scaling are its job.

How bright does an outdoor screen need to be?

COB or SMD — which should I buy?

SMD remains the cost-effective default for most pitches and outdoor work. Choose COB when the wall is fine-pitch, close to people, or exposed to touch and cleaning — its sealed surface and uniformity justify the premium in control rooms, studios and retail flagships.

Can you ship spare modules and receiving cards with the screen?
