How to Choose an NVR: Channels, PoE, HDD Bays and AI

Channel count is the easy part. Retention days, incoming bandwidth and decode capability are where projects quietly fail — here is how to get all four right.

The Quick Answer

Pick channels for tomorrow, PoE for small sites, bays for retention, and check the incoming-bandwidth line that everyone skips.

For up to 16 cameras, a PoE NVR is the cleanest install: cameras plug straight into the recorder's own PoE ports, get power and auto-configure — no separate switch, one box on the wall. Above 16 cameras, or when cameras are scattered across a site, a standard NVR fed by PoE switches scales better and keeps cabling sane.

Five Checks Before You Order

Five minutes with a calculator prevents the two classic NVR failures: full disks and dropped streams.

  1. Channels: cameras today + 30% growth. A 9-channel unit for 8 cameras is full on day one; the 16-channel version costs little more and sells the upgrade for you.
  2. Incoming bandwidth: sum all camera main-stream bitrates and stay under the NVR's stated incoming Mbps with 25% headroom — this line, not channel count, is the real ceiling.
  3. Storage: days × cameras × bitrate. At 4Mbps per camera, one 16-camera site fills roughly 690GB a day — pick bays and disk sizes from that number, not from guesswork.
  4. H.265 everywhere: it roughly halves storage and bandwidth versus H.264 at the same quality. Make sure both cameras and NVR run it, or you pay double on disks.
  5. Decode & display: check how many channels the NVR can decode on screen at once (e.g. 4K outputs, split views) if the customer wants a live video wall, not just playback.

Retention rule of thumb with H.265 at 4Mbps: one 8TB surveillance drive holds about 11–12 days of 16 cameras, or 23 days of 8 cameras. Insurers and mining sites often demand 30–90 days — that requirement alone frequently decides between a 2-bay and an 8-bay machine.

Do You Actually Need an AI NVR?

AI on the recorder is worth paying for in two situations — and a waste of money in most others.

Situation one: search. When something happens, an AI NVR finds a person or vehicle across days of footage in seconds — face search, plate search, search-by-image on the higher models — instead of an operator scrubbing timelines for hours. Situation two: older or mixed camera fleets. NVR-side intelligence adds person/vehicle filtering even when the cameras themselves are basic.

If the site just needs recording and the cameras already do person/vehicle detection at the edge, a standard NVR plus smart cameras covers it — the recorder simply files the events the cameras flag. That combination is usually the better budget split.

Four NVR Mistakes We See Monthly

All four are avoidable with the checks above — here is what they look like in the wild.

Desktop HDDs in a 24/7 recorder

MISTAKEOrdinary PC drives fail within months under constant multi-stream writes; footage is gone exactly when it is needed.

DO THISSpecify surveillance-class HDDs rated for 24/7 workloads; on 8+ bay machines use RAID 1/5 so one dead disk is an event, not a disaster.

Maxing channels, ignoring bandwidth

MISTAKEThirty-two 4K cameras on a 32-channel NVR — the channel count fits, the incoming Mbps does not, and streams drop at night when bitrates peak.

PoE NVR for a scattered site

MISTAKECameras 150–300m away, home-run cabled straight to the PoE NVR — half the links never come up because PoE NVR ports are standard 100m ports.

DO THISScattered or distant cameras call for field PoE switches (FE models reach 250m in extend mode) uplinked to a standard NVR — put the switching where the cameras are.

How many days of footage will my disks hold?

Days ≈ total TB × 8000 ÷ (cameras × Mbps × 86400 ÷ 1000). Practical anchor: 8TB at H.265/4Mbps holds ~23 days of 8 cameras or ~11 days of 16. Tell us your camera list and target days and we return the exact disk plan.

Can I mix your cameras with an NVR I already own?

Usually yes over ONVIF — video and recording generally work, while advanced AI events may need same-brand pairing. Send both model numbers with your enquiry and we confirm feature-by-feature before you buy.

What happens to recordings during a power cut?

Recording stops with the power and resumes automatically on restore. For sites with unstable grids we recommend a small UPS on the NVR, and cameras with local TF cards plus ANR, which backfill the NVR gap when the link returns.

Can I view the NVR from my phone abroad?

Remote access is supported across the range — most models via P2P without a fixed IP, plus browser access; supported remote-user counts are listed per model. We pre-configure remote access on request before shipping.

Do I need RAID, or are more days of footage better?

If losing footage costs you money or legal standing — banks, logistics, mining — RAID 1/5 on an 8+ bay unit is worth the capacity sacrifice. For a shop, more retention days usually beat redundancy. We will run both configurations for you at quote time.
